Summmmer Vacation!

June 17, 2011

Hello Everyone — where to even begin?

As you all know, I started this year with the goal of truly appreciating where I am at and the opportunities around me. I spent the winter skiing, hiking, at lots of hockey games, ice skating, and trying to enjoy the snow (and all that comes with it!) as much as possible. I’m actively working on keeping the same strategy for summer — I’ve made a list of hikes to go on, and I’m trying one new one each week. B recently got me a day pack with a hydration liner — which helps me to (at least) feel like a real explorer!

I’ve also spent memorial day in Seward, AK camping with friends, fished for kings on the Deshka river, trained for the 1/2 marathon with countless runs along the coastal trail, found a bunch of baby black bears up a dirt road in a valley, and  spent a weekend on Wasilla lake at the new RumRunner’s resort for a wedding. Plus, B is teaching me how to play golf, and I’m determined to at least get a few tennis games in on sunny days this year.

Speaking of the Mayor’s Marathon — I ran the course one last time last weekend — at least the first 10 miles. I was certainly sore Monday, but I did it, and I have confidence I’ll do it again this weekend! I tried hard to rest this week — but couldn’t resist a little biking, and some intense hiking! Gotta get out anytime you can up here :)

Kyle and Megan arrive tomorrow — and along with the run, I’m looking forward to our Homer trip (maybe even some fishing if Dad’s boat is in the water!), taking M to Girdwood for the first time (the mountain is open for hiking, as well as my typical favorite trail out to the hand cart! Plus, Fizz at The Seven Glacier’s once we get up to the top!). Not to mention Solstice adventures (Slightly Stoopid at Moose’s Tooth) here in Anchorage, and mayyyybe Flattop if we aren’t too sore!

Of course in other news — little sis is back living with us again for the summer. She’s taken up Horseback Riding — and we’ve resumed our bike riding! I dropped my bike off at the Bicycle Shop to get all tuned up for the summer. Can’t wait to pick it up — I’ve got my eye on some amazing looking new trails up on the Southside and out in Talkeetna!

Education wise — I’m taking a break from school for the summer. Resting up for full-time status in the fall again! and I LOVE IT. But really, who wouldn’t?

Looking forward to a BUSY week — and I’ll leave you with a picture update in the meantime!

A Fresh Start

January 21, 2011

First things first:

ITS 2011!

I know —  obviously! It has been for about three weeks now, but thats just how I roll.

Here’s the scoop on the Alaska life these days:

1. This is what it looks like outside today…many of you probably think, “Hm..miserable” BUT I’m stoked. Its been like -15* for weeks on end now, and the clouds up in the sky, and the snow falling down warm me up, and make everything much prettier. Plus, in an ongoing effort to “be a real Alaskan” I can play in the snow this weekend, snowboots and all!

2. Speaking of snowboots — look at these! I may have bought them at Nordstrom, and wear them only with leggings, but they still actually keep my feet warm and dry … and cute!

3. PS — In 2011, this is me! My hair is MUCH darker, and I’m drinking … hot chocolate. Actually, it was my first and only starbuck’s run of 2011, and it was desperation (see #1, -15*). I’m done with milk, and even in my love for the company and coffee culture, I’m not about to drink black coffee (ewwww) or chug espresso shots. Plus, I’m saving tons of $$$ (lets be real though, that never mattered to me)

4. Ok — this looks super gross up on the blog — but its an important “Its 2011 and New” item as well. Remember last year — or even like, last month — when I was vegan? I’ve pretty much done a complete 180* and now focus on only have protein at my meal, often accompanied with veggies, and snacks of fruit (not to be confused with gummy fruit snacks — I wish!). This picture was my lunch yesterday — yes, I bought an entire rotisserie chicken.

5. This should surprise NONE of you — this is what it looks like to go on a weekend trip with me. Spontaneity and I have never been the best of friends. Rach and I head to Vegas next weekend for a girls trip — and I’m SO excited. In N’ Out, Pools (at which we will be the only people, as even 65* will seem like tropical summer weather to us!), crazy nights out, amazing (tax-exempt!) shopping, and on and on.

Other noteable items:

      • Back in school! I’m taking “Intensive Management of Public Funds”  – or as I call it “finance”. I feel like every single person in my program is in this class, its with the same professor I had last semester.
      • Back to the gym! LOVING getting back into my running, spinning and weights. Much more energy — especially in the freezing cold blah winters!

Thats all I’ve got for today — such a random post — but all things 2011!

love.

Oh baby, why don’t we dance?

October 30, 2010

“There are many things in life that will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart…pursue those”

Ok, almost made it an ENTIRE month without posting. Long gone are the days of posting everyday or even every week! Fail. But I’m back!

Hopefully all of you have settled into fall and are gearing up for winter — we had our first completely frozen AM this morning (note to self: seriously work on snow tires…) but otherwise we’ve had the most amazing fall weather! Sunshine, sunshine and more sunshine. Of course, thats led to some chilly weather BUT it’s also allowed for a few final hikes, explorations and even just walks out and about before reallllllly having to bundle up.

Where to even begin??

I have a new nephew — Bradley Thomas, and a new …second cousin? Zoey Paige. Aka, Joe and Tricia both had their babies (within a week of each other!). SO much fun to have newborns around — I always forget how tiny they really are!

Also in October — I had my one year anniversary in Alaska (celebrated in Seattle, natch), and had my one year anniversary here at the office. As things like this always go — it seems like in some ways I’ve been here forever and at other times, like this year has FLOWN by.

Seattle was an amazing trip — jam packed start to finish of course, filled with delicious breakfast/brunch/lunch/happy hour/dinner dates, wineries, the babies (!!!), old friends, and lots of family time. A glorious four days that left me exhausted and yet entirely revitalized and refilled with city energy…and about a months worth of new clothes! :) True to my last post — all “grown up” clothes. I love it!

I’m back to house sitting — and along with my big huge kitchen to work in again, I’ve also been utilizing the workout room! Finally (its been…months?) I’m actually waking up early and working out! Its certainly still a work in progress — but, as I knew I would, I really truly love it. The peace and quiet has also brought back my interest (love?) of reading. I’ve finished two books…in a week! AND I need to get back into HP! Tickets went on sale a few days ago…and I’m still on book 5! Fail.

In other news –

  • I’ve been luxuriously lazy and been relaxing, lots of wine nights, dinners, lunch dates, and movie nights, and most importantly sleep. Believe me, I’m not complaining!
  • I went to a party — in the valley! It was a crazy night filled with square dancing, beer festivals, wet t-shirt contests, and pole dancing (obviously not me!)…whew.
  • I LOVE that hockey is back — I’ve actually been to quite a few games already and plan to absolutely keep it up!
  • I took Bren and Izzy to see Mamma Mia! at the PAC while it was here — if it comes to a town near you, GO! It was fabulous.
  • Halloween this weekend — re-wearing the Wonder Woman costume, only this time, it’ll be with people my age and not a room full of eight year olds (hopefully…haha)
  • I still LOVE my CSA. Seriously — if you don’t have one, find one near you! www.fullcirclefarm.com
  • I’ll be in Spokane for a week in December — let’s hang out!

PS: New pic blog ASAP – Bible.

Curious.

September 18, 2010

A few curiosities from this week:

  • I wrote a 6 page analytical paper…and liked it.
  • I’ve become ADDICTED to nutmeg. In everything. I even take the top off so I can have more without having to shake it like an idiot for 5 minutes.
  • I’m obsessed with VEGETABLE juice and SPINACH smoothies. Yes, this girl. The one who cried once when she took a BITE of sushi with seaweed.
  • Alaskans hate vegetable juice and spinach smoothies. Maybe just all green food in general in fact.
  • I’ve decided to marry a cowboy. See www.pioneerwoman.com for further reference.
  • I haven’t run…one mile….but thats all about to change because I finally got to hit up the Skinny Raven sale and walked away with a bright (seriously…turquoise!) new pair of shiny shoes. They’re practically screaming for some mud!
  • I have come to the conclusion that being 24 calls for dressing like a grown up. I ordered a blazer online, and maybe even a tunic or two.

Twenty. Four.

September 13, 2010

“…People change, too.  We all start out as babies, and our features mature as we age.  Our hairstyles and clothes change with the trends.  But what stays the same?  Spirit.  We can trust that love never goes out of style, and never moves away.” – My Ayurvedic “coach”

Well, another year has come and gone.

I celebrated my brithday in two of the most amazing and perfectly “me” ways.

The first was with a wine tasting and dinner for my friends and I last Sunday. Katrina hosted, and together we cooked six courses for 12 people. Mango. Goat Cheese. Home made hummus. Smoked salmon. Vegan chocolate cake. It was all of the foods I loved. I think we definitely pushed people a little — to try new foods, pronounce words they’ve never heard and sip wines they had never even noticed/heard of before. But I LOVED it.

On my actual birthday I had the most amazing “me” day. It felt great to reconnect with myself a little. I started the day with an sbux (natch) and a nice day at work. Cleared my desk (we all know I love that!) and then headed home, made a quick veggie soup in my crock pot before heading to yoga with Heidi. It was her last week for awhile, so I HAD to go. Tuesday night races — next week! I came back home, cracked open a bottle of wine, had some soup and a big piece of leftover cake, a little San Pelligrino and read the latest US Weekly. Took a long hot shower and bath, read some HP and fell asleep early.

Actually, its amazing to think what a year it was — last year, I was driving a green bug, living in Seattle with Katelyn and working with the twins. I hadn’t ever run more than a mile, I hadn’t even taken the GRE (let alone applied to grad school) and I had hair that hung down my back.

Here I sit, hair chopped to my chin, finishing a day of work at the office, about to head to class in my Master’s program, in my new white SUV, in Alaska, before I head to train for my 10k at the gym.

I guess time does make all of the difference. I feel as though in a lot of ways, I’m in a whole new place. I have a re-newed confidence in myself, my strength and my abilities, and yet, I spent a lot of time this past year out of my comfort zone and learning some lessons (not all fun ones) about both myself and life in general. I feel more on track and at the same time more misplaced than ever before. I’m rapidly pushing toward some goals, and yet I’ve reverted back to a simpler life in some ways also.

Mostly, I can’t wait to see where I’m at next year. If I could see my future I’m TOTALLY one of those people who wouldn’t hesitate to look. I love to have a plan — and that would be the ultimate way to know :) Crazy though — how the surprises are often the best part of life. The grass is always greener I suppose.

Life these days….

  • Back to volunteering! I am working the Safe and Sound Fair on Saturday for the Med Corps, and then working the Bocci games on Sunday for Special Olympics. We all know how much I LOVE these events — can’t wait.
  • I have to WRITE. AN. ESSAY. by next week. I haven’t written an analytical essay…in years. Yikes!
  • I REALLY felt the love on my bday. My phone, my facebook, my mailbox, all blowing up. I can’t wait to return the love to all of you.
  • I’ve had the house to myself for about a week now — lots of cooking, cleaning and soaking up the silence.

Highlights for my kitchen this week:

  • Roasted butternut squash in wild rice with leeks and white corn (all from my CSA! Yum)
  • Fresh carrot, ginger, beet juice — made at home!
  • Veggie Tacos: roasted corn tortillas with zuchinni, corn, black beans, quinoa, diced green pepper, onion, garlic and cilantro.

Fall Romance

September 1, 2010

ahhhhh fall.

Thats a sigh of relief and contentment — not a scream.

Although I’ve played up the typical, “where did my summer go?” and “september already?!” quotes that are practically required of people this year after such a rainy blah summer — secretly I’m excited. I L-O-V-E fall. I always have — the trees are starting to drop their leaves here, you can see your breath at night, and I woke up in the dark for the first time the other day. Pumpkin spice latte’s are back and comfort food is now comforting (as opposed to just an annoying way to heat up the house baking/cooking for hours on a hot day).

There have been so many good things in life these days! Let me fill you in –

Sunday night kickball has been replaced with “fall football”. While this is a little sad as I’m no longer playing (and therefore need to find a time to fit in a workout again on Sundays!) its dreamy because I now can just snuggle under a blanket with a glass of wine and laugh with the girls while the boys run around sweating and hitting each other. Football has always been one of my favorite sports — and while my friends are hardly professional athletes, you don’t get a chance to see much of it live up here. I’ll take what I can get. Last week we followed football by building a fire and relaxing for awhile — hopefully this will become a tradition as well. Best thing I’ve done in awhile — and I get to do it every week! Any ideas for winter sports? I’d love to play hockey on the lagoon — but somehow I think that’ll be a bit more challenging to put together. The perks of kickball and football have been that they are free and really require nothing beyond showing up….just something to keep in mind!

Katrina is hosting a little wine dinner for my birthday next week — my goal is to get my friends here into wine so that I can drink it more often and enjoy it with everyone instead of having a bottle to myself — orrrr really, so we can each have a bottle :)  We’ve got crudites and champagne to have out while people are arriving and milling around, and then we’ll seat everyone. Then we’ll be serving the following: bruschetta, toasted goat cheese and mango salad, a cold aspargus in vinegar dish, portobello mushroom stuffed zuchinni, smoked salmon pasta and a vegan chocolate ganache cake with fresh raspberries to top it all off. I’m *hoping* this is enough food for all the boys — as its vegan…the whole thing. Except for the fish of course, we all know I can’t resist salmon!!! It should be a wonderful night — filled with friends, laughs, great food and good wine.

In other news — I started my class last week, and I’m LOVING it. I’m loving the graduate school as a whole actually — all of the professors and students have been great. So open, accommodating and helpful! My class will have A LOT of reading — I’m talking like 300 pages a week, so thats a big change from nothing (especially because I’m actually just bummed it’ll take some time away from Harry Potter!) but I’m excited none the less. Really I can’t whine about it tooooo much — our professor splits it all up among the class, and then asks that we at least skim over each article, but know the one we are assigned well. It seems like a nice way to combine all of the things we need to know but also accommodate for our lives outside of school. I have day two of class tonight — and hopefully over the course of this semester I’ll be finagling my way into working with a few prof’s on research projects.

Fitness wise — I signed up for another 10k. Run for Beans — to benefit the local soup kitchen. I was going to do the 5k — but I like the idea of pushing myself to train a little :) I’ve been better at keeping up with the work outs again the past few weeks — yoga last night (the BEST class I’ve had in awhile — we had a small group, so we were able to have some fun with inversions, and movement flows. Needless to say I am stoked that Heidi is back, the hour and a half flew by, and my body is SORE), running today, and then spinning tomorrow. Mostly, I’m focused on picking back up my cross training AND my strength training — as both kind of fell off this summer. I haven’t been able to get up…one single morning…for swimming. But honestly — its still a goal. Something to ease into I suppose. Tuesday night races start next week — and Heidi is staying one extra month before she leaves for the winter! Hooray!

As for Alaska — the political arena has heated things up a bit. You may have seen Joe Miller, our GOP senate candidate, tea party member and endorsed by Sarah Palin on the news? We had our primary last week — I was frustrated to find out the following: we are a party state — so you can ONLY vote within your declared party. Also, proposition 2 passed — I wont start raving here because I could go on forever, BUT I suppose this is something I need to get used to. The majority of the people here are VERY conservative. Sigh. The good side? I’ve gotten thrown back into the political game. And more importantly — I kind of missed it, and I’m really enjoying it. Take the negative — and turn it into the positive. Work for/with the candidates I love, educate the people around me, and help organizations to deal with the consequences of laws that are passed despite being poorly written and deceivingly marketed. Double sigh.

In lighter news — the Alaska State Fair is going on. It’s something I LOVED as a child — and I was able to spend a whole day out there last weekend as an EMT. While it was POURING rain. Like Seattle on steroids. I still had fun though — treated myself to a “brick” of fries (finished half and threw them away) and a candy apple (ate the whole thing — you gotta live once in awhile right?). It was funny though — a bit like going back to your childhood elementary school or even your middle school — at the time everything seemed so big, and chaotic and intense — and yet, as an adult — it seems smaller, more relaxed and even easier

The number one thing I’m excited for this fall/winter is some TRAVELING! Trips I have planned:

  • Seattle in late September, early October
  • New York City in November
  • Denver in January
  • Napa in May

Cannot WAIT to see all of you guys!

In other news this week — I’ve been OBSESSED with my CSA box… and its only week two. I’ve made it a goal of mine to try to order or switch out for at least two veggies each week that I don’t use or haven’t ever had. This week it was parsnips, patty pan squash (so cute!), turnips and baby bok choy. I’ve HAD baby bok choy before, but I’ve never cooked it or bought it myself. Highlights from my kitchen this week:

  • Steamed baby bok choi, broccoli, carrots, cremini mushrooms, with an onion/garlic/ginger glaze over brown rice
  • Nut-butter crusted parsnip fries
  • Saffron rice with steamed winter vegetables (turnips! patty pan squash!)
  • A HUGE organic salad: arugala, fresh greens, diced mango and goat cheese!
  • My OWN baked apple chips
  • Shredded carrot and beet salad with toasted pine nuts

Observations? Sometimes its better just to buy things! About a few months ago, I found baked organic apple chips at Natural Pantry. I’m obsessed. I could seriously eat a bag a day — and the best thing is, I really could. It’s 4 organic apples, sliced and baked. Thats it. SO of course, I thought I’d save some money and just make them at home. Which…granted, my apples were about $5 for 5, a bag of apple chips is $3.29. So its only marginally cheaper. The issue here is the TIME involved. I have a mandolin — so I’m lucky, no hand slicing for me! BUT about two apples fit on each baking sheet, I only have two oven racks (WTH???), and you bake them for about 75 minutes. They do make the house smell WONDERFUL, and they do taste exactly the same, but it takes about…3 hours total to make half a bag. I might just try it with pears as soon as they are back in season though. Yum. Also, turnips taste like nothing to me (raw AND cooked in) and parsnips when peeled smell EXACTLY like raw carrots.

OTHERWISE — not too many crazy things going on around here. World Affair Council meetings start back up next week — with a former CIA agent speaking on “Recovering the World’s Treasures”. Should be an interesting one! I bought my symphony tickets — two of them. I actually talked my way into floor seats, on an aisle and for the cheapest price! The house is quiet (FINALLY!) My newest nightly routine: I light the new candles for my room (cinnamon? pumpkin? leaves? yes, yes and yes!), I read book 5 of Harry Potter,  and drink a glass of wine.

Relax. Relax. Relax. while I can!

On the Edge of Fall

August 20, 2010

QUICKLY approaching one year here in AK! Unbelievable.

This week has been a bit of a dreary one — we all got sick. I think it was a combination of our marathon-binge to say goodbye to everyone and our double header kickball game followed by 3-on-3 soccer last weekend…ending at 11p. Things in Alaska are going pretty well, settling down nicely. We are back to having only three people in our house — a welcome and peaceful change. In fact, Aunt K is heading to Florida to visit, and then her and G will both be heading to Arkansas to see family. It’ll be….JUST me! Madness.

We officially said goodbye to: Max, Solveig, Molly and Clark last weekend. Now we are down to the skeleton crew, and Garrett. But he wont be leaving until October, so we have a little time to digest that one :)

Mostly I’m stoked because I’ve been back in the kitchen and cooking up a storm — I have tried some of THE best recipes lately, filling and yet unbelievably healthy. Diced caprese salad with chilled quinoa, pumpkin pie overnight oats, grilled eggplant with a caprese topping to name a few. Hit me up if you’d like the recipes!

In other news:

  • I had my school orientation last Wednesday, and I’ve officially got my books. Off and running! I LOVED my professors. I also got the opportunity to meet three of my fellow students. One is an architect who moved here three weeks ago from Chicago, another is from Iowa and works for the National Park Service running a migratory bird program. All seem really interesting — I’m excited!
  • Nordstrom FINALLY stocked my perfect fall boots. Two years in the making and I’m SO excited. They are to die for. AND they came in the mail. Pics to come soon!
  • Tuesday night races start ON my birthday this year — hello fate!
  • Ghostland Observatory will be back for the first tap in October again this year — yes!
  • I gave up drinking coffee — this is day four. I’ve replaced my coffee with a veggie juice. Yes, I am the one with a fear of drinking veggies, and yes, I’m drinking veggie juice. So far I’ve only had carrot and beet, but…I like it. A lot.
  • I finally found a new running skirt at Target the other day (really, all good things come from Target!) and its just sunny enough today to use it. Dreamy. Speaking of which — its been a little chilly, but SUNNY the past three days, and you would think it was 100* outside. After that month of rain Alaskan’s are sure ready for some fun in the sun!
  • This weekend is full of fun relaxing things: girls day, yoga, EMS volunteering, long runs, sunshine, birthday dinners, and hopefully just a little bit of doing…nothing. Sometimes it really is the simple things!

Next week: school starts, the fair starts, AND I start my morning work out plan (great time to give up coffee right?! haha). New week, new me!

…and I’m Back!

August 11, 2010

“There are six billion people in the world. Even if your market is hand-made spoke shaves for left-handed woodworkers, there are more people in your market than you can ever hope to track down. There are lots of good reasons to abandon a project. Having a little competition is not one of them. Even if it’s Google you’re up against.” – Seth Godin

I’m back — I cleaned my room, and my bathroom, did all of my laundry, switched out my candles, went through my stack of paperwork. I broke out the planner, paid my bills, planned my races for fall, and bought season tickets to the symphony. I’ve cooked dinners and breakfasts, all vegetarian and mostly vegan. I rode a bike 5 miles on a blustery day and laughed like a 5 year old zooming down hills, I played Jenga and Scattergories,  I went to power yoga,  and I drank a bottle of red wine.

Seems like a list of all very day-in and day-out things — but these are the things I loved. I do love — but I lost for a little while there. I dropped the ball, got caught up in the sunny, languid days of summer and just “rolled with the tide”. No doubt the rain, the moon shining at night and the fact that I can see my breath are helping me to be motivated — fall is my favorite season, and one I just feel SO at peace in.

Annnnyway — its time for a picture post!

The Beginning of the End

August 4, 2010

1.) EVERYTHING YOU DO WILL ALWAYS LEAVE A MARK.

2.) YOU CAN ALWAYS CORRECT THE MISTAKES YOU MAKE.

3.) WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS WHAT IS INSIDE OF YOU.

4.) IN LIFE, YOU WILL UNDERGO PAINFUL SHARPENINGS, WHICH WILL ONLY MAKE YOU BETTER.

5.) TO BE THE BEST PENCIL, YOU MUST ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE HELD AND GUIDED BY THE HAND THAT HOLDS YOU.

I received an email with these “rules for life” this morning, written by a pencil maker. I liked the simplicity of them and yet, each one is so true. SO I thought I’d share with you all.

It’s been awhile — let’s catch up!

School: I finished my econ class! I had my final exam last Saturday, which I haven’t gotten my grades back from yet, but I think went pretty well. I certainly learned that 100% online courses are NOT for me. I learn best from the conversation and discussion that a classroom setting provides, and luckily the rest of my program will be on campus. My next course starts August 25 and will be with Dr. Protasel, the director of my program that I met with back in May. I’m reallllly excited BUT also loving the time off.

Volunteer Life: I’m slacking! Besides my monthly shift at the Listening Post (tonight!) and my EMS shifts with the Medical Corps, I’ve been slacking. I do know that I would like to do at least one more build with Habitat before the season is over!

Fitness: Oh man — I’ve just been starting to really get back into it (at the gym) — I’m running 3x a week again, and then on the other days I focus on strength training and cross training (yoga, spinning, swimming, etc). While I love my outside time, hiking and kickball, kite flying, etc. To stay toned and really in shape, I need the intensity of my gym. I like being able to know exactly how far, how fast, and how much I’ve worked each muscle. I’d like to try and start working out in the mornings before work — but as you all know, definitely NOT my best time. Still though — maybe even just 2x during the work week would open up my evenings a lot and make things a little less hectic.

Social Life: Well, this is definitely the big one these days. Everyone is starting to leave (boo) — so it seems every day is a birthday party, a going away party, an engagement party, a dinner party, etc. and its SO hard to say no to these things — because, well, everyone is leaving. It’s interesting because we are really getting older (almost) everyone has graduated from school, and this is the final summer they plan on being back. From here on out, we’ll see people for a week here or there (hopefully!), but I think this was our last official summer where it seems like everyone came home. Some of my BEST friends here are leaving — namely Solveig and Max — so its definitely a challenge, but luckily I’ve been meeting new people. If anything, I’ve always got Rach, and I’ll have more time for school, work and working out! The other side of this has been the visitors — Veronica was here, my kids were here, Kyle and Megan are here, the twins are here, etc. etc. everyone is on vacation and wanting to go out and do fun things — and since I’m the one who “lives here”, I’m expected to plan. Its worked out really well, and I’ve had  blast, but I’m realllllly ready for real life again.

Family: Ohhhhh the family. Two nights ago, we had 11 people staying in our house. That pretty much sums it up! Chaos. Lots of people, all ages, running around. The kids all start school in a few weeks though, so we’ll be losing B again. She’s made such progress this summer — independent, curious, kind, courteous, etc. It’s always hard to send her back to her parents and watch her transform back. Hopefully some of the lessons will stick and in some way shape the person she becomes. Its been nice to have Kyle here, we’ve had family dinners at a few different places. Even though I am here, I fill up my time so much that I really don’t see a lot of my family members — the little cousins, my uncles, etc. everyone is just busy! This is one more area where I just cant wait for it to go back to normal — I’m ready for an empty house again. Maybe some housesitting, but mostly, just quiet time.

In other news:

  • I’m reading the Harry Potter series at my friend Daniel’s suggestion — and I’m actually really enjoying them. I’m on book 3 — half way there. My goal is to have read all of the books, and had a movie marathon before the new movie comes out in November.
  • I signed up for a quick little 5k race for next weekend — I’m excited tho! I haven’t had a race since TTK in June!!!!
  • Speaking of which — Tuesday Night Races start again soon — one of the first event I found in AK. Every Tuesday, a different trail around the city, $2, various distances…yes!
  • My kickball league has totally taken off — we had a record 25 people show up last week, and everyone loved it! We played as the sunset, and ended up with a double header because everyone was having fun!
  • I got my car detailed today — a little bit of a splurge, but I really want to “protect my investment” and the past few weeks my beige seats have taken it prettttty rough. I forgot what it was like to road trip with little ones!
  • I’m OBSESSED with Organic Oasis. Its this heavenly (but deathly expensive) cafe here in Anch. Not only do they have a full menu of fresh soups and salads, sandwiches and entrees (most of which are vegetarian and even vegan!) but they made smoothies with several different health mixes (almost like my fav Little Green Monsters!) AND they sell snacks: roasted seeds, milled flours, raw chocolate bars, house ground peanut butter. Basically, I live there.

I love you all — I know I’ve REALLY been slacking on keeping in touch — I’m working on it. Swear.  BUT don’t hesitate to keep me in line!

“Other things may change us, but we start and end with family”

July 15, 2010

This afternoon as I went to re-fill my tea, I looked out the window and saw a little songbird sitting on the sidewalk.  Sorry Mom — tried, really tried, to find a picture so I could accurately name the species…but I fail. Now for some people, this wouldn’t mean much, but of course, I stood there watching it for a minute. Was it breathing? Were either of the wings drooping? Were its eyes open? I noticed a few feathers on one of our picture windows and my first reaction was to walk out and pick up the bird. Cup my hands around it, perched in one palm, its head resting in my thumb loop, like I’ve done it for years. This is when it hit me — I have done this for years. While anyone who saw me probably thought I was crazy, I knew that all the bird needed was to warm up and a chance to gather itself a little. So without thinking I held the helpless little thing for a few minutes, stood in the sun, enjoyed a little fresh air and walked it over to the hedge where they all live. I opened my hands and off it went.

It was an endearing moment with nature to break up the monotony of each day inside my office — and especially on a sunny day I’ll never turn down a chance to run outside, but the bigger thing here is the nuances ingrained in each of us by our families. I specifically say families here because each member contributes something — there are small things I say and do each day without ever giving it a second thought. If I take a moment to stop and think about it — I can name the person I am acting JUST like.  Birds will always be one of those things for me — I’ll never see an eagle soar overhead, or hear a loon’s song without smiling and thinking of my mom. For as long as I can remember, we’ve been listening to and looking at birds all around us. From kitchen windows, binoculars, car sun roofs, boats, boardwalks, the list goes on.

For awhile, I got so into it that I wanted to be an ornithologist. Looking back, I think I liked the sound of the name, so official and intense, more than the actual job. But I decided I liked birds, and therefore, that summer my mom decided it was time for me to work with birds. (Keep in mind that I was 11) She found a local bird treatment center, where they not only rescue birds but do some ground-breaking treatment and rehabilitation work and public education. And we are not talking sparrows and chickadees here, but eagles, owls, eiders. With dedication unrivaled, she found a way to let them allow me to work at the center. Most of my shifts were in the nursery (hello heaven, fluffy baby birds to play with!) and cleaning, but I was able to watch a few eagle surgeries, feed a blind owl, and clean oil off of sea eiders caught in the oil spill.

The whole point of this story is that for as crazy and large as my family is, the chaos, the drama, the mis-communications that blow up every tiny story into something completely different in four hours flat. For as much as I complain, sigh, and snap at them in annoyance,  I am a lucky.  I’ve spent a lot of time lately thinking about family — as you all know, its a big part of why I moved up here. I enjoy my cousins, my uncles, my aunts, my grandma, and my little sister. Being around them more often and being involved in their lives is nice. The twins are here from Washington, Bren is here from Homer, Joe was just here from Florida, Kyle and Megan are coming up in a few weeks from Washington. While its a bit chaotic trying to manage a normal life in a house packed with so many people at so many ages,  it reminds me that no matter how far apart we all are a majority of the time — every time we are together again the fun never stops and only more memories are made.

I’ll never take it for granted that I am one of the lucky ones. In my years working with kids — I can see what a difference the immediate family you grow up with makes. I was fortunate enough to be blessed with parents who also have placed a value in me from the beginning, they waited for us, they wanted us, and we knew it. For as long as I can remember, they have been answering endless questions with un-explicable patience, and encouraging the natural curiosity and exploration of children while offering explanations for the world around me.

When I think beyond my parents — I feel like I have two families, my Alaska family and my family. Without either one, there’s no chance I’d be the same person I am today. I enjoy the history and the variety of my Alaska family, all of the lessons learned during the summers here, the freedom to explore who I am in various situations, and the learned ability to survive anywhere, with anyone, under even the more dire circumstances for just as long as I have to. But my family — my brothers and my mom are the ones who I feel have truly helped me to become the person I am today. While my brothers support me, and will always be there to help, they definitely keep me in line and hold me accountable. While I don’t always like it — it’s an extremely important part of growing up. This is why I can’t believe it when my friends who are only children are well-adjusted (and why I just smile when I see that sometimes, they aren’t).

And through it all — from day one — there has always been my mom. While I find myself sighing impatiently when she calls to talk, or may roll my eyes when she fills my room, and then my apartment, with amazing finds from anywhere and everywhere,  I owe it all to her. I’m so sad for my friends who don’t enjoy their Mom’s — we have a great time together. Our relationship is not limited by only girly things (in fact, I denied her those girly things for so many years, I try to make up for it now) or only to family dinners and events — we can enjoy each other in so many different places. Shopping, eating at new restaurants, cooking our own dinners, cigars in Mexico (see below), sipping champagne, crazy road trips, opera nights, walks in the park, working hard on some crazy project she dreamed up , or just doing absolutely nothing.

So cheers to you mum — while I know we’ve  been a lot of work, the boys and I all appreciate it. We’ve driven you crazy (sometimes on purpose), we’ve gotten into plenty of trouble, denied you much needed sleep, complained through all of the lessons — and through it all, you’ve loved us unconditionally, kept us in line, helped us to explore ourselves, taught us everything (and much more) we needed to know, given us everything we’ve ever needed and plenty of what we’ve wanted. You’ve given us all of you — and its always been more than enough.

PS: Happy Birthday Week!
